About the WebSite Schema Generator
Google shows a site name above each result, and WebSite markup is one of the main signals it uses to choose that name. Google requires name and url on the homepage, and recommends alternateName for a shorter or acronym version, such as a brand known by its initials. The markup belongs on the home page of the domain or subdomain whose name you want to set.
This website schema generator produces the JSON-LD in your browser, keeping your details on your device. Use a name that is consistent with your title tags, logo and Organization markup; a name that differs from what appears elsewhere may be ignored. Google retired the sitelinks search box in late 2024, so a SearchAction is no longer needed for that purpose and the generator focuses on the properties that still matter.
How to use it
- Enter your preferred site name exactly as you want it shown.
- Add a shorter alternate name if your brand uses one.
- Enter the homepage URL of the domain or subdomain.
- Copy the JSON-LD into your homepage and request reindexing.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Google showing the wrong site name for my website?
Google picks a site name from several signals, including WebSite markup, title tags, headings and how others refer to the site. If those disagree, it may choose something else. Add WebSite markup with your preferred name on the homepage, make your title and Organization name consistent, then wait for Google to recrawl.
Where should WebSite schema be placed?
On the homepage only, at the domain or subdomain level, for example example.com or blog.example.com. Google does not use it to set a site name for subfolders such as example.com/blog. Repeating it on every page is unnecessary. One block on the homepage is enough.
Do I still need SearchAction for the sitelinks search box?
Not for Google. Google stopped showing the sitelinks search box in late 2024, so SearchAction markup no longer triggers it. The markup is still valid schema.org and harmless if it is already in place, but it is no longer needed for that feature.
