Google Business Profile

  • Why & how

Why: Your profile is the main source for the local pack and Maps results.

How: Fill every relevant field: categories, hours, services, attributes, photos and description.

Use the Business Profile Description Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Primary category is one of the strongest local ranking inputs and decides which features you get.

How: Check categories used by top-ranking competitors in Maps and pick the closest exact match.

  • Why & how

Why: Keyword stuffing in names violates Google guidelines and can lead to suspension.

How: Match the name on your signage, invoices and GST registration exactly.

  • Why & how

Why: Service-area businesses that show a home address risk violating guidelines.

How: In the profile, add cities or PIN-code areas you serve and clear the address if customers do not visit.

NAP & citations

  • Why & how

Why: Inconsistent details confuse customers and weaken trust signals across directories.

How: Decide the exact format (e.g. 'Shop No.', 'Rd'), then match it on site, GBP and listings.

Use the NAP Consistency Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Customers use these platforms directly, and other maps and assistants draw on their data.

How: Claim the listings, use the same NAP, categories and hours, and keep logins documented.

  • Why & how

Why: Duplicate listings split reviews and may show an old phone number or address.

How: Search your business name and phone number on Google Maps and directories; merge or remove duplicates.

Use the NAP Consistency Checker →

Location pages on your website

  • Why & how

Why: A dedicated page gives Google a relevant URL to link from your profile and rank for '[service] in [city]'.

How: Include unique local content: address, map, hours, team, local projects or testimonials.

Use the Local Landing Page Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: It confirms local relevance for searches that include a place name.

How: Example: 'AC Repair in Andheri West – Same-Day Service'.

Use the On-Page Keyword Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Text NAP is crawlable and click-to-call reduces friction on mobile.

How: Avoid placing the address only inside an image; use tel:+91… links for phone numbers.

Use the Local Landing Page Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Structured data reinforces your business details for search engines.

How: Use the most specific subtype (e.g. Dentist, Restaurant) and match the GBP details exactly.

Use the Local Business Schema Generator →

  • Why & how

Why: Doorway-style pages violate spam policies and rarely rank.

How: Only publish city pages where you genuinely serve customers and have local information to add.

Use the Content Similarity Checker →

Reviews & reputation

  • Why & how

Why: Review count, rating and recency influence both local rankings and click choice.

How: Share a short review link or QR code on invoices, WhatsApp follow-ups and the counter.

Use the Google Review Link Generator →

  • Why & how

Why: Fake or incentivized reviews break Google policy and can trigger review removal or profile restrictions.

How: Ask all customers equally and avoid filtering only happy customers to Google.

  • Why & how

Why: Responses show prospects you care and can turn complaints into trust.

How: Thank the reviewer, address the issue specifically and move details offline politely.

Local links & tracking

  • Why & how

Why: Locally relevant links strengthen your prominence in the area.

How: List chambers of commerce, sponsorships and partner sites, and ask for a link to the location page.

  • Why & how

Why: Without tagging, profile clicks often appear as generic organic traffic in GA4.

How: Use utm_source=google, utm_medium=organic and utm_campaign=gbp on the website URL.

    Use the UTM Builder →

  • Why & how

Why: These actions show whether local visibility turns into enquiries.

How: Review the profile's Performance view each month and log trends against changes you made.

About the Local SEO Checklist

Local rankings depend on relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your shop, but you can make your business details consistent, your Google Business Profile complete, your location pages useful and your reviews steady. This local SEO checklist covers all of that in five sections, from profile setup to measuring calls and direction requests.

It is written with Indian businesses in mind, including directories like Justdial and PIN-code service areas, but the steps apply anywhere. Items link to tools such as the NAP consistency checker, local landing page checker and Google review link generator. Work through it once to set up, then revisit the reviews and tracking sections every month. Your ticks are kept only in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Start with the Google Business Profile section and fix gaps there first.
  2. Set your master NAP and compare it with every listing.
  3. Check each location page and its schema with the linked tools.
  4. Set up a monthly routine for reviews, posts and performance tracking.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main local SEO ranking factors?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that means an accurate, complete Business Profile with the right primary category, consistent business details across the web, helpful location pages, a steady flow of genuine reviews and local links or mentions. Distance from the searcher is outside your control.

Do I need a separate page for each city?

Create a page for each location where you have an office or genuinely serve customers and can add useful local detail, such as address, team, projects or reviews. Pages that only swap the city name are treated as doorway pages and rarely help. Service-area businesses can group nearby areas on fewer, stronger pages.

Do citations still matter for local SEO?

Consistent listings on major platforms still help customers find you and support trust in your details, though mass-submitting to hundreds of low-quality directories adds little. Focus on Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, key industry directories and popular local platforms, and make sure name, address and phone match exactly.
