Access for AI crawlers

  • Why & how

Why: Training crawlers and AI search/retrieval bots are separate; blocking one does not block the other.

How: Allow search bots like OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot if you want citations.

Use the AI Crawler Access Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: AI Overviews and AI Mode use normal Googlebot crawling; Google-Extended only controls Gemini model use.

How: Do not block Googlebot to opt out of AI features; use nosnippet or data-nosnippet instead.

    Use the robots.txt Tester →

  • Why & how

Why: Some CDNs and WAFs block AI crawlers by default, overriding a permissive robots.txt.

How: Review Cloudflare or other bot rules and server logs for 403 responses to AI user agents.

Use the Bulk HTTP Status Code Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Several AI assistants rely on Bing's index for retrieval, so Bing gaps can become AI visibility gaps.

How: Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit sitemaps and consider IndexNow for fast updates.

Use the XML Sitemap Validator →

Extractable content

  • Why & how

Why: Many AI crawlers fetch raw HTML and do not execute JavaScript.

How: Compare view-source with the rendered page; server-render or pre-render key content.

Use the AI Search Readiness Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: AI systems lift short passages; an answer that stands alone is easier to quote accurately.

How: Under each question-style H2, give a 40–60 word answer before details and caveats.

Use the AI Search Readiness Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Conversational queries map naturally to headings phrased as questions.

How: Gather questions from People Also Ask, support tickets and sales calls.

Use the Question Keyword Generator →

  • Why & how

Why: Structured formats are easier for both readers and models to parse correctly.

How: Use real <table> with headers and <ol>/<ul>, not styled divs.

Use the Semantic HTML Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Main, article and heading structure help systems separate content from navigation and ads.

How: Wrap the primary content in <main>/<article> and set <html lang>.

Use the Semantic HTML Checker →

Entity & trust signals

  • Why & how

Why: Clear entity data helps systems connect your site, brand and social profiles.

How: Add sameAs links to LinkedIn, YouTube, Wikipedia/Wikidata (if any) and official profiles.

Use the Organization Schema Generator →

  • Why & how

Why: Named experts and clear accountability support trust, especially on YMYL topics.

How: Add bylines linking to author pages with expertise and sameAs links.

Use the Person Schema Generator →

  • Why & how

Why: Freshness matters for many AI answers and inconsistent dates look unreliable.

How: Align visible dates, datePublished/dateModified and the sitemap lastmod.

Use the Content Freshness Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: Unique facts give AI systems a reason to cite you rather than a summary site.

How: Add first-party statistics, case studies, pricing in ₹ or test results with methodology.

  • Why & how

Why: AI answers often draw on reviews, forums, news and comparison pages, not just your site.

How: Keep listings accurate, earn press coverage and take part genuinely in relevant communities.

Controls & optional files

  • Why & how

Why: These are the supported Google controls for snippets, AI Overviews and AI Mode.

How: Apply data-nosnippet to specific blocks rather than the whole page where possible.

Use the Meta Robots & X-Robots-Tag Checker →

  • Why & how

Why: llms.txt is a community proposal; no major search engine has said it uses it for ranking.

How: If you add one, keep it short, curated and in valid format with absolute URLs.

    Use the llms.txt Generator →

  • Why & how

Why: A malformed file is not useful to any tool that does read it.

How: Check the H1, summary blockquote, H2 sections and Markdown link list.

    Use the llms.txt Validator →

Measurement

  • Why & how

Why: Referral traffic from AI assistants is small but often highly qualified.

How: Build a GA4 exploration or custom channel group matching referrers like chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai.

Use the Regex Tester for SEO →

  • Why & how

Why: Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside overall Search performance.

How: Watch impressions vs clicks for long, conversational queries and the pages behind them.

Use the Search Console Performance Analyzer →

  • Why & how

Why: Manual spot checks show whether your brand and pages are being mentioned or cited.

How: Keep a fixed prompt list, record cited sources and track changes over time.

About the AI Search (AEO/GEO) Checklist

AI search tools such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot retrieve web pages and quote them in generated answers. This AI SEO checklist focuses on what you can control: whether their crawlers can reach you, whether your content can be extracted and attributed, whether your brand is a clear entity, and whether you can measure the result.

The list separates proven practices from optional ones. Strong SEO fundamentals still do most of the work, and llms.txt is included only as an optional community proposal with no confirmed ranking use. Items link to the AI crawler access checker, AI search readiness checker and semantic HTML checker. Ticks are stored only in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Check which AI crawlers your robots.txt, CDN and firewall allow.
  2. Review one key page for server-rendered, answer-first content.
  3. Strengthen Organization, author and date signals with schema.
  4. Set up AI referral tracking and a monthly citation spot-check.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank pages in search results. Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on being the direct answer in features and assistants, and generative engine optimization (GEO) focuses on being cited or mentioned in AI-generated answers. They overlap heavily: crawlable, clear, trustworthy content with strong entity signals helps all three.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove my site from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended controls whether content is used for Gemini models and grounding, but AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search and use normal Googlebot crawling. To limit what can be shown, use nosnippet, max-snippet or data-nosnippet. Blocking Googlebot would remove you from regular search too.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It is optional. llms.txt is a community proposal for giving language models a curated map of your key content, and no major search engine has said it uses it for ranking. It is low effort to add, so some sites publish one, but crawl access and good content matter far more.
