About the Image Sitemap Generator
An image sitemap tells Google which images appear on which pages. This image sitemap generator takes pairs of page URLs and image URLs and builds a valid XML sitemap using the image:image extension, grouping several images under the same page where needed. Input stays in your browser while the file is built.
Most sites do not need a separate image sitemap because Google finds images through img elements in the HTML. It is most useful when images are loaded by JavaScript, hosted on a CDN or a different domain, or are important for Google Images traffic, such as product photos or stock images. You can also add the image tags to your existing sitemap instead. Submit the file in Search Console or reference it in robots.txt.
How to use it
- Enter page URLs with the image URLs that appear on each page.
- Generate the XML image sitemap.
- Download the file and upload it to your site.
- Submit it in Search Console or add it to robots.txt.
Frequently asked questions
Which image sitemap tags does Google support?
Google uses image:image with image:loc for the image URL. In 2022 Google deprecated the caption, title, geo_location and license tags, so they are no longer needed. Use alt text and structured data on the page to describe images instead. Old tags are ignored.
Can image URLs be on a different domain?
Yes. Images hosted on a CDN or another domain can be listed in your image sitemap, as long as the page URL belongs to your verified site. Make sure the CDN does not block Googlebot from crawling the images. Check the CDN's robots.txt.
How many images can a sitemap include?
Google allows up to 1,000 images per page entry in an image sitemap. The standard sitemap limits of 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per file also apply, so split large sitemaps and use a sitemap index. Most sites stay well below these limits.
