About the UTM Parameter Checker

Bad tagging is one of the most common causes of messy analytics. This UTM checker parses a list of pasted URLs and shows every UTM parameter in a table. It flags links missing source, medium or campaign, values with inconsistent capitalisation, spaces, duplicated parameters, and combinations of source and medium that are unlikely to land in the GA4 default channel group you expect.

That last check is useful because GA4 assigns channels using rules on source and medium. A paid social link tagged with medium social, for example, may not be counted as Paid Social. Run the checker on links from agencies, colleagues or old campaigns before they go live. The URLs are parsed in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Paste one or more campaign URLs, one per line.
  2. Review the parsed parameters for each link.
  3. Fix flagged issues such as missing medium or mixed case.
  4. Re-check the corrected links before publishing them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my campaign show as Unassigned in GA4?

Traffic lands in Unassigned when its source and medium do not match any default channel group rule. Unusual medium values are a common cause. Use mediums GA4 recognises, such as email, cpc or paid_social, to get the channel you expect.

Do spaces in UTM values cause problems?

Spaces must be encoded, and different tools encode them differently (%20 or +), which can split reports. It is safer to use hyphens or underscores instead of spaces in UTM values. The checker flags spaces so you can replace them before links go out, and keeps your campaign names consistent in reports.

What happens with duplicate UTM parameters?

If a URL contains the same parameter twice, analytics tools may read only one of them, and which one can vary. Duplicates usually come from tagging an already tagged URL, so remove the extras. Strip existing tags first, then add the correct ones once.
